The youngest of seven, Huey P. Newton was born in a Monroe, Louisiana and moved with his family to Oakland, California as a child. In 1966, the 24-year-old Newton, with Bobby Seale, co-founded the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense. Newton and Seale articulated a ten-point plan of liberation which placed the Panthers in the international spotlight and made them the target of a well-documented program of government harassment. In 1967, Newton was arrested for the murder of an Oakland police officer which inspired thousands world-wide to take up the chant, "Free Huey!" Acquitted in 1970, Huey emerged triumphantly, only to be confined in a penthouse apartment, his self-described "stucco cell."
Leading a creative, complex and controversial life, Newton was an enigmatic figure. A largely self-educated political theorist and poet, Newton published an autobiography, Revolutionary Suicide; To Die for the People, a collection of essays; On Common Ground, conversations at Yale University; and Insights and Other Poems. In 1974, Newton went to Cuba, fleeing murder and assault charges in Oakland. He returned to Oakland in 1977 to stand trial, once again avoiding conviction. In 1980, he earned a Ph.D. at the University of California at Santa Cruz. His dissertation was published as War Against the Panthers: A Study of Repression in America. Newton spent the last years of his life fighting protracted legal battles and self-acknowledged vices. In 1989, he was murdered in Oakland by a 24-year-old drug dealer, his life tragically extinguished on the same streets where he had labored to deliver "All Power to the People."

The Renaissance WurliTzer Opus 2022 was originally built in WurliTzer’s North Tonawanda, New York factory in 1928 for Warner Brothers Vitaphone Company and installed in the Sunset Boulevard Studio in Hollywood in 1929. It was built for scoring “talkies” and beefing up the studio orchestra. The organ was used for recordings and radio shows throughout the 30’s & 40’s. In 1955, this organ was purchased by Joe Kearns. Kearns, best known for his roles as the vault-keeper on the Jack Benny radio show and as Mr. Wilson on TV’s “Dennis the Menace” series, had been a professional theatre organist in Utah. Mr Kearns actually built a home around this instrument in Hollywood, California. The Renaissance purchased the organ in 1985.
Featuring organist Betty Keppler.

"My visual art stems from the ideal of capturing one's imagination by manifesting it into a physical presence whenever possible."
About Brain Blankets: "For artists, all components of life are potential venues for creativity - from one's manner of speech, to the arrangement of furniture, to one's daily clothing choices. Finding particular enjoyment in the arena of costuming and fashion design, my exploration into the traditional craft of crochet quickly steered itself on to the heads around me. Brain Blankets were born - from a need to approach all activities creatively and an inclination toware creative adornment."
Event will take place in the new atrium lobby.

As a realistic portrayal of life in rural South Carolina in 1964, "The Secret Life of Bees" is dreaming. As a parable of hope and love, it is enchanting. Should it have been painful, or a parable? Parable, I think, so it will please those who loved the novel by Sue Monk Kidd. One critic has described it as sappy, syrupy, sentimental and sermonizing, and those are only the S's.
Tickets are $2 each and available at NECIC offices

There is something for everyone, from the famous Bikini and Chippendale Slalom races, to the SoBe Kids Challenge and two events to take place in the Tubing Park, the Yard Sale Pick-Up and the Cardboard Creation Race. The slopes and parks will attract many, and the Carnival even more, as Snow Trails gears up for an expected 5,000 visitors. The area will be open from 9:00am- 9:30pm for regular skiing and snowboarding Saturday and Sunday. The Vertical Descent Tubing Park will be open from 9:00am- Midnight on Saturday and 9:00am- 9:30pm on Sunday. Thanks to the cold temperatures and the four foot base of snow across the slopes, some of the season's best conditions are expected.
The first day will begin with the slopes opening at 9:00am on Saturday. The Ski Patrol Bratwurst Burn will begin serving their delicious brats and beer at 11:00am. The first event of the day, the SoBe Kids Challenge, will take place close to the Terrainasaurus Park, for the youngsters at 11:30am. The Amstel Light Challenge will draw a crowd to view participants, 21 years of age and older, on this extreme obstacle course at 1:00pm, followed by an event added to the Carnival just last season named the Yard Sale Pick-Up, to take place at 2:00pm, showcasing participants 15 years old and under competing to pick-up all items, placed in a Tubing Park lane, while tubing down.
The ever-so-popular Bikini and Chippendale races will take place beginning at 3:00pm on Saturday. A presentation for Ohio Ski Queen and awards for the day's activities will be held at 4:30pm in The Snowflake Loft, located on the second floor of the main lodge. Evening entertainment begins on Friday night at 8:00pm with live music by Jeremy and Kyle, of the band Red Ball Jets, playing classic and modern rock. Saturday night's entertainment begins at 9:00pm in The Snowflake Loft with the band Shucking Bubba Deluxe, just prior to the elegance of the Torch Parade on the Mt. Mansfield slope at 9:30pm.
The second day will begin with the slopes opening at 9:00am on Sunday. The Snow Trails Ski Patrol will fire up the outdoor grill once again at 11:00am, as the Carnival Giant Slalom race gets underway. The Guest Costume Contest judging is scheduled for noon.
It's all part of the fun, as the course will be set and ready to signal the first qualifying heat of the Skier and Boarder Cross race, slated for Noon. A race of this nature is a hybrid of down-hill skiing and snowboarding through a motocross type course of snow. Contestants race five or six at a time down the potentially disastrous course. This event is similar to that of the Winter X Games.
A second event, added to Carnival activities in the tubing park, named the Cardboard Creation Race, will begin at 1:00pm. Prior to the race, competitors will construct from cardboard, paper, and tape only, an object to be judged for design and piloted the furthest distance down one of the Vertical Descent Tubing Park lanes, while still intact and in the fastest time.
Set as the grand finale of the Carnival is the Mountain Dew Slush Cup at 3:30pm, where daring individuals on snowboards or skis try their best at skimming across an icy pool of green colored slush and water. Most do not make it across the lengthy pool, proving to be a treat more for the spectators than the participants. The day's awards will follow at 5:00pm in The Snowflake Loft.
