Built in 1847, it has seven gables, five double chimneys and seven marble fireplaces. Louis Bromfield, native of Mansfield and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, played at Oak Hill as a child. His memories of the home were the basis for "Shane's Castle" in his 1924 novel "The Green Bay Tree". Operated by the Richland County Historical Society. Considered to be the most perfect Gothic House in the U.S.! We welcome small clubs or family groups! Designated a literary landmark by the National Friends of the Library Association.
Haunted history: Discover Ohio.com stated that no tour of "haunted Ohio" is complete without a stop by Mansfield and Oak Hill Cottage. Chandeliers are known to flicker on and off and a fastidious elderly woman straightening pillows or testing for dust has been spotted by visitors. The docents are well aware that neighborhood and local tradition say the house is haunted. Oak Hill volunteers even enjoy a good ghost story as much as anyone, but our tours are not about that aspect. Our ability to offer access to the house beyond well-supervised tours is curtailed because of the abundant historically significant household contents on site. Visitors who are curious about seeing all corners of the house may wish to sign up for the "Basement to Attic" Tour on September 18, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. or 7:30 p.m.
The "Basement to Attic" Tour is $12.00 per person and price includes a beautiful set of Oak Hill note cards. The tour is approximately 2 hours in length. Get a behind the scenes look at all the nooks and crannies that you don't see on the regular tour, starting with the basement and continuing with a full house tour including the maid's quarters and attic. You must be able to negotiate steep stairs and stoop through low doorways. Proper footwear is required- not flip-flops and sandals must have straps. Group size is very limited. Email from our contact link at www.oakhillcottage.org, or call 419-524-1765 and leave a message with your phone number for confirmation.
